Movie Review by: Keerti Kadam

Each one of us have fantasised about superheroes, some time or the other, as a child or as an adult, to tide over our difficulties in life. A selfless person, whom we may call a social worker, actually has been working for the welfare of tribals in Maharashtra, who were living in inhuman conditions. Son of social activist Baba Amte, who throughout his life worked for rehabilitating people, suffering from leprosy, Dr. Prakash Murlidhar Amte, is a living example of Superhero. Advocate Samruoddhi Porey, national award winning director has come out with a biopic on Dr. Prakash Baba Amte.

Baba Amte (Dr. Mohan Aagashe), who set up ‘Aanandvan’ for rehabilitation of leprosy stricken patients/people, who could not afford medical treatment, takes his family for a picnic to ‘Hemalkasa’, and his elder son, Prakash, gets intrigued by seeing the plight of tribals there. Baba Amte wanted to set up facilitation centre there, but Prakash, a medico by profession, volunteers to go to Hemalkasa for the same, knowing fully well, about hardships to be faced and giving up luxuries of comfortable life. Dr. Manda (Sonali Kulkarni), newly married wife of Dr. Prakash Amte ( Nana Patekar), readily agrees to accompany him, in spite of hailing from a well to do family. In dense forest, infested by Naxalites, neglected by government authorities, they set up, with the help of few dependable associates, a medical centre in huts, where they choose to reside too. Difficulties galore like non-communication; due to alien language, age old tribal customs. But, these super human beings, bring these ‘Aadivasis’ to mainstream and even treat wild animals, as part of their family.

Prakash Amte Nana Patekar Sonali Kulkarni
A salute to the producers, for presenting this true story in the form of a mainstream cinema. Thanks to Director for handling this sensible subject with sincerity and maturity. The screenplay, with true life incidents is compact and does not keep lingering. Dialogues are the backbone of this script and lift it to another level. They throw light on realities with subtle humour interspersed. Incidentally, each scene says something, to make you think and that’s a plus. The director is successful in maintaining the required pace in storytelling and with some witty dialogues, this serious subject doesn’t become boring. Music (Rahul Ranade, Aniruddha Wankar) has little importance, but is apt and doesn’t halt the pace of the film. Background score is noteworthy, creating required impact. Cinematography (Mahesh Aney) is engrossing with different angles capturing raw forest beauty. Dr. Mohan Aagashe has convincingly portrayed Baba Amte. Sonali Kulkarni has rendered a sterling performance as Dr. Manda, wife of Dr. Prakash Amte. A loving wife, mother, doctor, caretaker, supporter of husband’s every decision, she moves through the frames with utmost ease.

Nana Pateker as Dr. Prakash Baba Amte towers above everyone and is outstanding. His empowering portrayal of Dr Prakash Amte is, as if he is conveying his own story. To act simple is the most difficult thing and Nana does it explicitly. He has fiddled with humour in an expansive way so that seriousness doesn’t overpower the scenes. He is so perfect. This can be termed as one of his best performances.

All superficial superheroes make way, The Real Hero is here, Dr. Prakash Baba Amte.

Natsamarat Marathi Movie, Jitendra Joshi, Medha Manjrekar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Nana Patkar, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Neha Pendse

Last year, well known actor  made his presence felt, when he played the role of Dr.Prakash Baba Amte’ in the film on the life of a great social activist. This year, he was already in the news, for his initiative to help the families of poor farmers in Maharashtra, through his NAAM foundation. But, more than that, the news about his playing the lead role of Appa Belwalkar, in the cinematic version of  V.V. Shirwadkar’s famous play ‘Natasamraat’. This film directed by Mahesh Manjrekar is complete now; and will be released on 1st January 2016, which also happens to be Nana Patekar.

On Wednesday evening the makers of Natasamraat and the presenters of this film Zee Studios revealed the first look of this film, in a big way, in presence of entire star cast of the film, media and special invites. After releasing the first look, which was very impressive, a talk show was arranged by anchor Jitendra Joshi, when he invited the three pillars of this film, director Mahesh Manjrekar, lead actor Nana Patekar and veteran actor Vikram Gokhale, who is playing an important role in the film, which has been created by the director, taking the cinematic liberties.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahesh Manjrekar made it very clear that he didn’t want to present the story in the original form, as noticed in the play and hence took the liberty of adding additional important characters for artistes like Vikram Gokhale, Jitendra Joshi, Sandeep Pathak and few others. Vikram Gokhale, who spoke very few words, said that he liked the performance of Dr.Shreeram Lagoo playing this character  on stage; but felt that Nana had also done a very good job, in his own way.

However, the hero of the day was Nana Patekar, who narrated his experience of working with Mahesh Manjrekar as director. He narrated several such happenings, which generated instant laughter from the  audience present at the function. Mahesh tried to explain his side; but when Nana is around, it is very difficult for others to defend themselves. But, it was all in good spirit, as Nana even did not allow the anchor to answer all his questions. Instead of taking more time, he instead allowed others like Medha Manjreakar, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Sandeep Pathak, Sunil Barve, Neha Pendse and others to speak.  But, before that, he was all praise for the director , his wife Medha, who played his wife Kaveri in the film and Neha Pendse, who played his family member in the film.

Among the other dignitaries who were present on the occasion were, producer Vishwas Joshi, Mr. Nitin Kini & Nikhil sane from Zee Group, Suhas Joshi, Rajesh Deshpande, Kiran Yadnyopavit, Jaywant Wadkar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Bharat Dabholkar and Cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar , who was a surprise guest, to wish the team of ‘Natasamraat’.

Filmmaker Samruddh Porey

After receiving overwhelming response for her Marathi film ‘Dr.Prakash Baba Amte- The real hero’, the biopic on social worker and Magsaysay Award winner from Maharashtra, filmmaker Samruddhi Porey  shot  the hindi version of this film titled ‘Hemalkasa’, with the same lead pair of Nana Patekar and Sonali Kulkarni.  And, the good news is that this film has entered the final round of Oscars competition.

It may be recalled that when ‘Court’ was India’s official entry for the foreign language category, ‘Hemalkasa’ was admitted in the open category, along with three more regional language films, namely ‘Nachomiya Kum Pasar( Konkani), ‘Jalam( Malyalam) & ‘Rangi Tarang( Kannada). And, now the news has reached us that ‘Hemalkasa’ is the only film Indian film which has been admitted in the final round for the 88th Academy awards. This will make the film eligible for the competition to receive nomination in the best film, best actor and best actress category.

But, all this was possible because of the hard work put in by Samruddhi Porey in Los Angeles , for the past 3- 4 months, going through all the stages of formalities to show the film to the members of Jury. Now, all eyes on this film, to see,
whether it receives nominations in the three categories mentioned above, when the final list will be declared on 14th January 2016.

V. V. Shirwadkar alias Kusumagraj was a  well known Marathi Poet and writer, who  was influenced by Shakespeare, Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Tolstoy in his writings. So, when he wrote his Marathi play ‘Natsamrat’‘, it was based on Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘King Lear’.  ‘Natasamraat’ was staged for many years with record number of shows and well known actors like Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Yashwant Dutt, Datta Bhat and others, have performed the central character of Ganpatrao Belvalkar successfully. But, the one performed by Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, is still fresh in the memory of those, who saw his great performance.

Now, director Mahesh Manjrekar has presented the cinematic version of this popular play, in his own way, with Nana Patekar playing the central character of Ganpatrao alias Appasaheb Belvalkar . And, in addition to his  family members comprising of wife kaveri (Medha Manjrekar), Son (Ajit Parab), daughter in law (Neha Pendse), grand daughter ( Pranjal Parab), daughter ( Mrunmayee Deshpande), son in law ( Sunil Barve), he has introduced a new character of Rambhau, played by versatile actor Vikram Gokhale, as his close friend. In  the process, he has extended his screenplay, with some witty conversations, taking place between the two friends, whenever they meet, over the session of drinks.

Natsamaraat marathi Moviestill

Nana Patekar in & as ‘Natsamrat’

In this film, the director has paid more attention on the home affairs of Ganpatrao, after his retirement, on receiving the highest honour of ‘NatSamrat’. In the process, the film has turned more into a family melodrama rather than a monologue, reminding you of some happenings  from  bollywood films  like ‘Baghban’, ‘jaisi karni Vaisi Bharni’, ‘Avtaar’ and few others.  In ‘Natasamrat’, Ganpatrao played by Nana Patekar  faces insults, first from his daughter in law, which forces him to leave his  own house, along with his wife Kaveri. But, before that Ganpatrao has committed a biggest mistake in his life, i.e. by  transferring all his assets in the name of his son and daughter. Ganpatrao being close to his daughter, is offered shelter by her and his son in law, in their house.

But, when the daughter alleges her own father for stealing her money, Ganpatrao and his wife quietly leave their house during the midnight hours of heavy rains, for onward journey to their native place. But, on the way, during a halt, Kaveri , who is already suffering from fever, passes away during her sleep. This brings Ganpatrao literally on the roads, as the person, who steals his bag, later offers him shelter under the bridge along with his small family. Though he is traced by his son and daughter, in an old drama theatre which is gutted in fire; Ganpatrao refuses to go with them and performs one last scene from his play , to conclude this film with its tragic end.

This film entirely belongs to actor Nana Patekar , who has played his role with total conviction. This is a lifetime role for a  complete actor in him. In short, ‘Natasamraat’ has brought out  the best out of Nana Patekar . But, this would not have been possible for him , without the support of Medha Manjrekar, who has given a wonderful performance as his co star Kaveri in this film. Medha has performed a role, which is more than her age; but, with her expressive face and good make up by Vikram Gaikwad, she was able to give her best. Another good performance, comes from young Mrunmayee Deshpande, who has done those two big emotion filled scenes, opposite senior experienced actor like Nana Patekar, exceptionally well.  There was no doubt about the ability of Vikram Gokhale, as he perfectly fitted into the witty character of Rambhau. The director has rightly taken close up scenes on him, to exploit his spontaneous facial expressions.  Among others in the supporting cast, good performances also come from Sunil Barve, Ajit Parab, Neha Pendse, Nilesh Divekar, Sarang Sathe , Jaywant Wadkar, little Pranjal Parab and others. But, Savita Malpekar and Vidyatai Patwardhan are just namesake in this film.  On location sound used by by Srikant kamble, art direction by Eknath kadam, cinematography by Ajith Reddy  and background score by Ajit Parab are the other plus points of this film.

This film, which presents the story of 70s era, does not actually relate to the changing lifestyle of today’s nuclear family system. So, it remains to be seen, how it appeals to today’s new generation. Moreover, today’s senior citizens have many other options after retirement. But, the central character of this film, being an actor, certainly sends a strong message to all those , for not committing the mistake done by Ganpatrao in this film. The film is technically very well presented and hence stands a chance of  inviting the attention of maximum film lovers. A worth watch, for the entire family together.
